St. John’s Prep flexes muscles, soars to boys lacrosse win over BC High
DANVERS — The St. John’s Prep boys lacrosse team is picking a fine time to play at its highest level.
After putting up a statement win last Wednesday against No. 2 Lincoln-Sudbury, the Eagles were even more impressive on Friday at Cronin Memorial Stadium against No. 3 BC High.
Led by a hat trick from Jake Vana and a stellar 13-save performance in goal by Max Putney, the Eagles blew open a close game with a six-goal second quarter and rolled to a 13-3 win over the visiting Eagles to all but clinch a Catholic Conference title.
“That was a good team win,” St. John’s (14-2) coach John Pynchon said. “It started with our offense and Max stepped up with some big saves in net along with our defense playing really well.”
The teams had played through a defensive battle earlier this season in West Roxbury that wasn’t decided in the Prep’s favor until late in the fourth quarter. The Eagles weren’t going to let that be the case on Friday.
BC High (10-6) jumped to a 1-0 lead early in the first and to a 2-1 lead on Tripp Schuwerk’s goal with 1:25 left in the period. But the hosts responded with two goals in the final moments of the quarter to take the lead for good.
It also proved to be the catalyst for the Prep’s dominant second quarter.
The Eagles outshot BCH 8-4 in the frame and took control of the game when Vana and Jack Doherty scored nine seconds apart to make it 5-2.
Doherty’s goal came as a result of a faceoff win, something he did all day long.
“Jack is just an outstanding competitor and tactician on those faceoffs,” Pynchon said. “He is just elite.”
The Prep’s run of goals reached five to make it 7-2 before Nick Emsing stopped the bleeding for the visitors. But Brendan Powers and Josh Haarman responded for the Prep in the final 100 seconds of the half to make it 9-3 at the break.
“That second quarter was important for us to get a run of goals like that,” Pynchon said.
Powers scored again at the outset of the third as the Eagles continued to carry the momentum.
Luke Kelly got his second of the game midway through the third before Vana completed his hat trick to make it 12-3 through 36 minutes. A final goal from Haarman late in the fourth closed out the scoring.
