Twins lead Westwood lacrosse past Medfield girls

WESTWOOD — Junior twin sisters Emilie (eight goals) and Charlotte DeMaio (four goals) combined to propel Westwood to a wild 16-15 lacrosse victory Thursday over one of the state’s best — Medfield.

“It means everything,” Emilie said afterward. “I think we really needed this big win. We’ve been needing the confidence recently. I think this is only going to make us stronger.”

It’s been a unique season for Westwood (14-3), which dropped to Div. 2 after a sustained run of success in Div. 1. The field hasn’t proven much easier, given the talented teams the Wolverines face consistently. Having fallen to the Warriors earlier in the season, Westwood came out looking to establish momentum. The two schools found themselves in a run-and-gun style of duel, as Emilie DeMaio opened the first half with four goals. Meanwhile, Medfield star and Boston College commit Kelly Blake matched her effort, sniping four tallies of her own. At the break, the two Tri-Valley League foes were separated by a goal, with Westwood leading, 8-7.

“It’s been a season of figuring out who we are,” said Westwood coach Margot Spatola. “Finding our identity. It’s a different team from last year, and a lot of people wonder what is going to happen after all those grads. This team has believed in themselves since the beginning.”

The game was expected to be a war, and the chess match continued into the third quarter. After Blake tied things up at 9-all for Medfield with 6:28 to go in the stanza, the DeMaio sisters found a secondary spark, and took things over. The siblings combined to score four of the final five goals between the two teams in the frame, giving Westwood a seemingly-insurmountable 13-10 advantage entering the fourth. The Wolverines would extend the lead to 15-10 after Emilie recorded her seventh goal with 10:36 to play.

“I think me and my sister have always had that chemistry,” Emily DeMaio said. “Once we get going, we just work really well together. You can tell on the field that we’re sisters, and that we’re going to work together.”

Yet, Medfield never waivered as it staged a massive rally. The players picked up speed on the field, the coaches getting ever more tense with each passing second. Blake went on to score three goals in the fourth quarter, sniping the equalizer off a free position shot with 4:10 remaining to make it 15-15. The crowd was stunned after witnessing the Warriors overcome a five-goal deficit.

Then, with 3:14 to go, E. DeMaio saved her best for last, scoring the game-clinching goal. Shortly thereafter, the Wolverines stormed the field in celebration.

Blake finished with eight goals to pace Medfield.

“They’re working their tails off,” Spatola said. “It’s showing. We want to be our best team at the end of the season, and we’re starting to get there.”
