Jayson Tatum scores 33 points, leads Celtics to Game 3 victory

Jayson Tatum quieted his critics. At least for one night, anyway.

Tatum guided the Boston Celtics to a 106-93 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland.

The Celtics lead the series 2-1.

Tatum was immense in his 42-minute outing, netting a team-high 33 points, hauling down 13 rebounds, dishing out six assists and going 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Jaylen Brown also stepped up, scoring 28 points on 13-for-17 shooting and adding nine rebounds.

Jrue Holiday and Derrick White added 18 and 12 points, respectively. Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 33 points.

Leading 57-48 at halftime, the Celtics quickly took control early in the third quarter, scoring the first nine points.

A White layup off a Holiday pass gave the Celtics a 98-84 lead with 5:40 left in the fourth quarter.

Tatum, the subject of much criticism after Boston’s 118-94 loss in Game at the TD Garden, came out inspired in the first half.

He was efficient in his 19 minutes on the floor, scoring a team-high 18 points, ripping down seven rebounds, dishing out three assists, and collecting one steal and one block. The Celtics led 30-28 after one quarter and then turned up the defensive pressure to holding the Cavs to 20 points in the second quarter en route to a 57-48 halftime lead.

Tatum wasn’t the only veteran star to play well in the first half.

Holiday, not known for his scoring in his first season in Boston, finished just behind Tatum with 15 first-half points, making 6-of-8 shots from the field. Brown was even more accurate from the floor, his 13 points coming on 6-of-7 shooting.

The Celtics held the Cavaliers to 38.6 shooting in the first half, a sign of their defensive intensity.

Mitchell led the Cavaliers at the break with 23 points.
