MSTCA track: Wellesley’s Christopher Brooks breaks record that had stood since 1987

BRAINTREE — As Christopher Brooks made his way onto the infield at Braintree High on Saturday, the Wellesley track star wasn’t feeling his best. The nagging injuries that come with the sport were starting to catch up to him. However, the senior was going to give it a go, regardless of the circumstances.

Good decision.

Brooks shattered a meet record in the boys 200-meter dash (21.20 seconds), besting a mark that had stood since 1987, as he made history at the annual MSTCA Coaches Outdoor Track & Field Meet.

“I think I was a little scared about my hamstring,” said Brooks. “I thought that there was maybe a chance I couldn’t (set a personal record). I didn’t know how I would break, drop off a decent PR like I did today. Felt pretty good.”

Brooks’ time topped Medford star Randy King’s record by .30 seconds, stunning the assembled crowd. The senior was later named a boys recipient of the Athlete of the Meet award. He wasn’t the lone standout, however.

Later on, in one of the top races, Boston Latin’s Colin Fisher rallied in the final stretch, outrunning Oliver Ames standout Brendan Thomas by .03 seconds to win the boys mile. It was a dramatic conclusion for the Wolfpack senior, as he emerged victorious by a single step with a time of 4:15.75.

The Brown commit wasn’t sure if he would have a chance as he entered the final turn. Then, he kicked things into high gear, using his strides to close the gap.

“With one lap to go, or about 500 (meters) to go, people were starting to make their move,” said Fisher. “I got boxed in a little, and I realized that it was time to go. I had to make my move. I saw my teammate run by me, and I just went for it. I started chasing the leader, and I was able to out-lean him right at the end there.”

Team awards were not handed out, but the Amherst Pelham girls put on a show with multiple wins.

Elizabeth Sawicki crossed the finish line for a victory in the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.17), while Moriah Luetjen placed first in the 400-meter run (56.67 seconds).

Other noteworthy performances included Attleboro senior Maxwell Crawford, who placed first in the boys 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.40 seconds. He also won the high jump competition with a height of six feet, two inches, and was selected for a Boys Athlete of the Meet award. Logan Alfandari of Amherst Pelham was also selected for his effort in the field events, winning the boys shot put (53-07 feet), while registering a second-place finish in the discus (151-05 feet).

Grace Okocha won the girls 100-meter dash, and paced Oliver Ames to a victory in the 4×100, combining with Julia Hansen, Gabrielle Antebi and Lavender Kozaka for a winning time of 49.95. Understandably, the MSTCA named her one of the Girls Athletes of the Meet, as well as Wellesley’s Annie Comella, who took first in the long jump event (18 feet, 9 inches).

Nina Kyei-Aboagye of Sharon dazzled, winning the 200-meter dash (24.99 seconds) while clocking in second in the 100-meter dash (12.16 seconds), also eventually earning Girls Athlete of the Meet honors.
