14 hits lead to 14 runs as St. Mary’s defeats Woburn in softball

WOBURN — Any time nine players get base hits and seven of them drive in at least one run, it’s usually a good recipe for success.

On Friday at Library Park, that’s just what the St. Mary’s softball team had going.

The Spartans pounded out 14 hits against Woburn pitching and blew open a tight game with a seven-run outburst in the top of the sixth inning that all added up to a 14-4 win over the Tanners.

“We had been kind of sitting around since Monday so it was nice to come out and play well,” St. Mary’s coach Colleen Newbury said.

The Spartans (8-2) scored in all but the second and fifth innings and were able to respond every time Woburn (9-6) would chip away at their lead.

A four-run top of the first inning set the tone for the afternoon. Brooke Moloney (3-4, 3 runs, 2 RBIs) led off with a bunt hit and promptly stole second.

Michaela Walker followed with a walk before Moloney scored on an error. Right fielder Lorynes Suriel (2-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI) doubled home two more before she crossed on a two-out error to close the inning.

“It was a big lift for us to get out to that fast start,” Newbury said.

Woburn got one back against Aliza Cream-Oviedo in the bottom of the first when Grace Forsythe homered to right center.

After neither team scored in the second, the Spartans did more damage in the third as Ashanthy Pardilla (3-5, 2 runs, 3 RBI) and Roma Braid (3-4, 2 RBI) each singled home a run. Woburn got one back in its half of the third before the Spartans answered with a run in the fourth to make it 7-2.

It stayed that way until the home half of the fifth when Savannah Powers led off with a bunt single. A hit batter and a sacrifice moved runners to second and third where Erin Govostes’ infield hit and error cut the lead to 7-4.

It proved to be as close as the Tanners could get as the Spartans blew the game open by sending 12 batters to the plate in the sixth. Olivia DeSessa, Abbey Souza and Braid each drove in one with Pardilla adding a two run single and Moloney an inning-capping two run homer.

That was more than enough run support for Crean-Oviedo, who went the distance, scattering five hits with seven strikeouts and only one walk.

“Aliza is doing everything that we’re asking her to,” Newbury said. “She isn’t walking many and we’re playing good defense behind her.”
