Hingham, Cam McKenna rebound by besting Marshfield, 7-1

MARSHFIELD — He may only be a sophomore, but Cam McKenna has earned the nickname “Hollywood” for a reason.

Many star athletes have gone through Hingham’s decorated boys lacrosse program. McKenna may be the latest in a long line.

The rising star turned in one of his best games of the season, finishing with a hat trick as Hingham pulled away in the second half for a crucial 7-1 victory over a fellow Patriot League juggernaut in Marshfield.

“Marshfield is a great program,” said Hingham coach John Todd. “Kevin (Orcutt) does an unbelievable job. He’s got them playing top-notch lacrosse, and I give him a ton of credit. He’s battling some injuries, but his kids played their butts off. We’re just happy that we were able to cash in, and separate a little bit from them in the goals, to not have two games go into overtime. They throw a couple goals in, that’s going to be a barn-burner the whole way.”

After Hingham (10-1) dropped to Div. 2 this season, some thought the Harbormen might roll back to a title game this season. The Harbormen have been challenged, however, most notably by Patriot League counterparts Duxbury and Marshfield. A Thursday night matchup with the Rams was precisely the type of clash they had been clamoring for.

The first half proved to be a defensive struggle, playing right into Hingham’s favor. McKenna registered a pair of goals during the first two quarters, as his group seized a 3-1 advantage at the intermission.

“I needed some more goals under my belt,” said McKenna. “Started off a little slow this year, but starting to pick it up.”

The third quarter followed a similar script, but the Harbormen were able to convert on their opportunities. McKenna completed his hat trick with 5:15 to go in the frame, before Max Friedman and Owen Packard closed the stanza with a goal apiece to help Hingham construct a 6-1 lead entering the fourth.

Meanwhile, the Harbormen continued to play suffocating defense.

“I think it’s going to be our key all the time,” Todd said. “We’re going to ride with our defense. I think our defense did a great job. They did a very good job the other day, but the problem is just about how many breaks you get. We did well, we focused on that sort of stuff. We got our feet back underneath us.”

Patrick Browne capped the scoring for Hingham with a goal in the final quarter. Packard finished with a pair of tallies for the Harbormen.

John Giberti sniped the lone goal for Marshfield early in the second stanza.

“It feels great,” McKenna said. “We had a poor Duxbury game, obviously. They got us in OT at home. So, we really needed a bounce-back game. I think we just made a statement here, that we are the best team in Division 2.”
