Kristaps Porzingis injury: Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla provides latest update

Joe Mazzulla doesn’t know how the Celtics will perform without Kristaps Porzingis.

But it will be at least a week before his starting center is ready to return to the floor.

Before Game 5 tipped off, Mazzulla told reporters Porzingis, who suffered a right soleus strain during Monday’s win in Miami, will be reevaluated next week.

“I’m not sure (how much time he’ll miss),” Boston’s head coach said Wednesday. “We’re just going to give him a week and see where he’s at, see how he responds in the treatment room over the next week.”

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Porzingis is expected to miss “a minimum of several games.” Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered the same calf injury during an April 9 game against the Celtics and has not played since, though he could return Thursday in Game 6 of Milwaukee’s series against Indiana.

The injury to Porzingis likewise is not believed to be season-ending, according to a report from The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.

Porzingis — one of Brad Stevens’ marquee offseason additions — sat out 25 games during his first season in Boston, and the Celtics won 21 of them. His absence likely will push 37-year-old Al Horford into the starting lineup for the foreseeable future, with Luke Kornet and Xavier Tillman topping the list of reserve options behind Horford.

“We’ve just got to go in playing confident and act as if nothing changed, even though he’s a big part of what we’ve had to this point,” Celtics guard Sam Hauser said Wednesday.

The Celtics lead the Heat 3-1 and can close out their best-of-seven series with a win Wednesday night at TD Garden.

If they advance, expect Porzingis to miss at least some, if not all, of their second-round series against Cleveland or Orlando.
