GIRLS BASKETBALL

In the Div. 4 preliminary round, Reese Brodin netted 14 points and Grace Fleuriel added 11 as No. 20 Winthrop (9-12) rolled to a 73-29 victory over No. 45 Bethany Christian. …Logan Lomasney had 19 points and eight rebounds while Ally Bettencourt netted 13 in her return as No. 29 Peabody (14-7) defeated No. 36 Beverly 72-45. … Kay-Lijah Oeshshlagel paced things with 15 points, while Molly Lucas added a 14-point spurt to power No. 17 Rockland (8-14) during a 61-27 victory over No. 48 Falmouth Academy. … Sasha Makogonov led the way with 13 points as Hamilton-Wenham defeated Bristol County, 55-19.

In the Div. 5 preliminaries, Fallon Ryan (25 points) and Margot Harper (20 points) each erupted offensively to propel No. 23 Hull (5-16) in a 63-23 win over No. 42 Excel.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Landon Cayton dropped 26 points with six boards and six assists while Jack Orton added 15 points as No. 22 Case (12-9) ousted No. 43 Northeast 81-57 in the Div. 4 preliminary round.

BOYS HOCKEY

In a Div. 3 preliminary, Aidan Cousineau registered a hat trick as No. 37 Bishop Stang (11-9-1) rolled to a 3-0 blanking of No. 28 East Longmeadow.

CLASS NOTES

Oliver Ames earned a victory over the MIAA in court and, as a result, will be allowed to compete in the state boys basketball tournament. The Tigers will host Norwood Wednesday night at 6.

The trouble started when Oliver Ames failed to complete the entry process into the boys’ basketball state tournament, thus were left out of the original field of 41 teams in the Division 2 state tournament (the Tigers would have been the No. 32-seed). The school appealed and were victorious in court and the MIAA later said it would abide by the court order.

This decision, and the subsequent re-seeding of the tournament, has significant ramifications. Four schools were scheduled to begin competition Monday evening, and those that were actually en route to the opponents’ venues were forced to turn around and return home

because of the judge’s decision.

A total of 19 schools now will be competing against different opponents, and many at different sites than previously scheduled when the initial seedings were unveiled Saturday afternoon.
