State gymnastics: STMA’s Jackie Bergeron claims Class 2A all-around crown
Jackie Bergeron has been chasing this goal for a long time now.
And in the final competition of her gymnastics career, the St. Michael-Albertville senior finally achieved it.
Bergeron finished with a score of 38.35 over four events to win the Class 2A all-around state title during individual competition at the Class 2A state gymnastics meet Saturday night at Roy Wilkins Auditorium.
“It’s super-exciting,” she said. “I can’t believe it’s actually real right now.”
Bergeron — who finished second to the now-graduated Taylar Schaefer of St. Cloud Cathedral last year — also claimed individual titles in three of the four events, winning the floor exercise (9.7), vault (9.8) and balance beam (9.625).
Bergeron was the first competitor up in the floor Saturday and her score stood up the entire way.
“I was really excited with how that went, but I knew there were so many other girls who had to go yet,” said Bergeron, who was competing at her fourth state meet but plans to compete in track and field at Wisconsin-La Crosse next year. “So to have it hold up like that was really cool.”
The state title in the uneven bars went to Cretin-Derham Hall/Minnehaha Academy/Mounds Park Academy junior Delaney Cunnington, who finished third behind Bergeron and Forest Lake senior Anna Philipson in the all-around.
“I felt pretty good about how I did,” said Cunnington, whose team finished second to Lakeville South in the team competition Friday night. “The goal was to just go out and see what happened. We put in a lot of work this season and it was nice to see it all pay off.”
It was also a good night for Mounds View/Irondale senior Avery Dox, who finished second to Bergeron in the vault.
“The last time I actually did (the) vault (that she performed Saturday), I think I was 13 in club gymnastics,” Dox said. “It was a big goal of mine to flip that.”
Philipson, meanwhile, tied for second in the balance beam with Lakeville South freshman Reese King and was third in the uneven bars and floor exercise. She was a club gymnast who took last year off before deciding to join the high school team for the first time this season.
“I’m so glad I did,” she said. “This season has been really fun.”
East Ridge sophomore Laney Schwellenbach finished second in the uneven bars.
Class A
North Branch junior Dakota Esget won the Class A all-around state gymnastics title Saturday in St. Paul, posting a score of 37.6 across the four events at Roy Wilkens Auditorium.
Esget also claimed an event title on uneven bars with her score of 9.5. Simley junior Lucy Penttila finished second in that event with a score of 9.425. Penttila was sixth in the all-around with a score of 36.7.
Esget finished second in floor and vault. The vault was the junior’s final event of the competition and, with a state championship on the line, Esget threw down a 9.725 on her second attempt.
Esget’s championship comes after she placed third in the all-around a year ago as a sophomore.
Hali Bullerman from Worthington was second in the all-around with a 37.25, while Monticello’s Lauren Hansen was in third.
Bullerman won the floor title with a 9.6. Becker’s Lauren Woelfel backed up the Bulldogs’ team title by winning the balance beam crown with a 9.45 and Avery McAllister from Perham/New York Mills won the vault with a 9.8.
