Taunton city councilor plans to announce Republican bid for Marc Pacheco’s Senate seat

A Taunton city councilor plans to announce next month a Republican campaign to replace outgoing Sen. Marc Pacheco, according to a notice for a kick-off event shared with the Herald.

Kelly Dooner is scheduled to hold a March 14 campaign announcement at The National Charter 957 in Taunton, an advisory said. Dooner was the youngest woman ever elected to the City Council in 2021, the notice said.

“She has served as the president of the City Council, worked to make Taunton a Purple Heart City, worked with Mayor (Shaunna) O’Connell on doubling the senior tax credit, and helped bring a common sense voice to the city’s financial issues,” a statement said.

A spokesperson for Dooner did not immediately return a request for comment.

Dooner is a lifelong resident of Massachusetts and earned a paralegal certificate in legal studies at Boston University. She is “actively involved” in the Massachusetts Young Republicans and serves on their executive board.

She is currently serving as the Massachusetts national state committeewoman for Young Republican National Federation, according to the organization’s website.

An online resume lists Dooner as working as a senior paralegal for Adelson Loria & Weisman for the past five years. She also worked for Summers & Summers and a real estate law firm, the law office of Susan Castleton Ryan P.C, the resume said.

She was a political intern for former Gov. Charlie Baker in 2014, according to her resume.

Pacheco, a Democrat and the longest serving member of the Massachusetts Senate, announced last week he would not seek re-election. He was first elected in 1988, served 16 terms, and became known for his work on climate change and the service privatization law named after him.

“While I am proud of all the work we have accomplished, much still needs to be done,” Pacheco said in a statement. “I look forward to working with my colleagues and everyone who is interested in making Massachusetts a better place to live; and while I am unsure what the future will bring, the door is always open for new and exciting opportunities.”

Massachusetts Democratic Party Chair Steve Kerrigan said last week there “may very well be a competitive Democratic primary” in the district. Party officials were already talking “about and to candidates,” he said.

Pacheco’s Third Bristol and Plymouth district includes Berkley, Carver, Dighton, Marion, Middleborough, Raynham, Rehoboth, Seekonk, Taunton, and Wareham.
