State Individual Gymnastics: Masconomet’s Misiura goes the distance

TEWKSBURY — How important was competing in the state individual all-around championship on Monday at Tewksbury for Masconomet’s Bella Misiura? She finished a competition in Texas on Sunday and hopped on a red-eye to get back to be on the mats for the Chieftains.

Needless to say, the effort was all worth it for Misiura after she put on a clinical performance. Recording the best score on three of the four apparatus, Misiura cruised to a nearly half-point victory over Westford Academy’s Maggie Murphy.

“There was lots of adrenaline and excitement,” joked Misiura about what got her through the competition.

Misiura set the tone for her day with a 9.750 on the vault in an eerily similar effort to a year ago when she stuck two vaults to give the Chieftains a team state title.

Murphy’s opening effort of 9.700 had her right in the mix early along with Marblehead/Swampscott’s Maeve McIlroy and Danvers’ Kaylee Westcott.

It was in the second rotation where Misiura, Murphy and McIlroy began to open some breathing room on the field.

Central Catholic’s Sophie Tressler, who finished seventh overall, had the best score on the bars but Misiura’s 9.625 effort bested both McIlroy and Murphy to give her a two-tenths of a point lead at the midway point.

The beam would be the undoing of several competitors on Monday, including Westcott as a fall took her out of the first place running. Misiura, however, was rock solid as her 9.650 was the best of the day and helped her open up her lead by another .125 over Murphy heading the floor exercise.

McIlroy, who came in the final rotation in third place, was first up and scored a solid 9.650. That set the stage for Misiura to salt away the title and she did just that with a nearly flawless routine that scored 9.800 and gave her an insurmountable lead.

Behind Misiura, Murphy and McIlroy it was Westcott finishing fourth and Norton’s Ella DeFeo in fifth ahead of Central Catholic’s Riley Salerno.
