TD Garden bag policy causes an uproar, ‘MASSIVE issue’ on debut day, Bruins writer says

A new bag policy at the TD Garden is not receiving a warm welcome, with one Bruins writer saying it created a “MASSIVE issue” on its debut day.

The policy, which went into effect ahead of Saturday’s Bruins game, prohibits fans from bringing bags larger than 6” x 4” x 1.5,” about the size of a drugstore photo print, into the arena. In addition, backpacks are also not allowed. Bags purchased at the Boston ProShop, however, are welcome.

“Walking into arena yesterday, this caused a MASSIVE issue,” Ty Anderson, a Bruins writer for 98.5 The Sports Hub, posted on X. “Lotta angry people being told they could check their bag for an extra $15.”

TD Garden, home of the Bruins, Celtics, music concerts and other entertainment, announced its new bag policy and “security screening experience” in a memo on its website last Tuesday, but it waited until Sunday to post about the procedures across its social media platforms.

“UPDATE: Effective Feb. 17, new @EvolvTechnology security screening will be implemented at TD Garden,” the post reads. “To ensure a swifter entry process, we strongly discourage guests from bringing bags. Bags larger than 6” x4” x 1.5” will not be permitted.”

That means many fans might not have been aware of the updates going into the Bruins Saturday matinee against Los Angeles.

“I’ve been going to the Garden for my entire life and haven’t ever had a single issue with the screening process,” a user wrote on X. “I’m kind of confused.”

The bag policy and updated “security screening” comprise a new partnership between TD Garden and Evolv Technology, which the arena describes as the “leading security technology company pioneering AI-based detection tools to create safer experiences.”

“Evolv has revolutionized security and the ease with which people gather for events by replacing traditional metal detectors with advanced screeners that provide a better, faster, and safer experience,” TD Garden’s memo states.

“Evolv’s Express system utilizes advanced AI and sensor technology to screen guests as they walk through security at the pace of life,” it continues. “Guests simply walk through a sleek and modern screening lane, eliminating the need for guests to stop and have personal effects such as mobile phones and wallets checked. This not only enhances security but also creates a more positive and efficient experience for everyone.”

While some bashed the new policy and screening, others were more receptive on social media.

“People getting mad over the stadium getting safer is something,” one user posted on X.

Fans who are not aware of the policy and bring non-complying bags will be allowed to store their items for a fee in a mobile locker located on Legends Way. The lockers will be available for all events 2 hours prior to event start time and close 1.5 hours after the event concludes. Items must be retrieved on the same day, according to officials.

“TD Garden is committed to providing a best-in-class experience for our guests, and safety and security is paramount,” TD Garden President and Bruins COO Glen Thornborough said in a release. “Evolv’s innovative technology allows us to do just that, while also streamlining the entry process and minimizing wait times.”

TD Garden will now have the most restrictive bag measurements compared to other major sports and entertainment venues in the region.

At Gillette Stadium, small clutch bags cannot exceed 8” x 5” x 2”, while at Fenway Park, bags must be single-compartment and no larger than 12″ x 12″x 6.

One user on X reacted to TD Garden’s policy, saying “I get not allowing big bags but my regular crossby purse that isn’t big at all exceeds this. You can barely fit a tampon in a 6″ x 4 x 1.5″ bag lol.”
