Comcast Tournament: Medfield, Fenwick girls advance

Medfield got just what it hoped for on Saturday afternoon.

Courtesy of 14 points from Tess Baacke and a late basket by Sadie Cumming, No. 3 Medfield held off a furious rally from No. 8 Central Catholic for a 60-56 win to advance in the IAABO Board 27/Comcast Tournament on Saturday at Woburn High School.

The Warriors (18-1) will play Bishop Fenwick, who defeated Woburn in the second game of the double header, in the Rich Antonelli bracket finals on Monday at 2 p.m. The win is Medfield’s lone win within single figures this year.

“We have not been a lot of situations like this all season long and that is why we’re playing here,” Medfield coach Mark Nickerson said. “We need to play in environments like this. We settled down as best as we could.”

Medfield built a 19-3 lead six minutes in and maintained a 41-27 advantage going into the half on the heels of two three pointers from Izzy Kittredge. The Raiders made a minor run in the third quarter courtesy of Aniela Kwo’s efforts on the offensive glass and eight points from Kerri Finneran, but a triple just before the buzzer by Cumming kept Medfield in front 51-39 going into the last eight minutes.

The Raiders, however, had one last burst. Finneran scored 10 straight points to trim the deficit to four and then moments later Kwo put home a third attempt to cap off a 17-6 run and make it a 57-56 Medfield lead with 49 seconds left. Cumming came through with a basket to stretch the lead up to three and a Raiders turnover at the other end sealed the win for the Warriors.

“Sadie and Annie Stanton both helped us finish today and our young kids also played,” Nickerson. “We’re a balanced group which means in any moment any one can step up and get the job done.”

In the second game, Bishop Fenwick used 21 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks from Cecilia Kay along with a stout defensive effort to get past Woburn, 48-39.

Along with Kay, Isabella Lopez-Marin and Caitlin Boyle each had eight points. The Crusaders will now take on Medfield who they defeated on Dec. 28. The Crusaders controlled play for most of the afternoon Saturday. Four points from Celia Neilson helped put Fenwick up 14-7 after one and eight points from Kay helped stretch the lead to 29-14 at the break.

The Tanners got the deficit to single digits, 39-32, after three courtesy of a Brooke Tuzolo trey at the buzzer. Fenwick, however, allowed just two made field goals in the fourth period to quell hopes of a Woburn comeback.
