Women’s hockey: No. 2 Wisconsin edges No. 5 Gophers in OT
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin’s Laila Edwards scored at the 1:52 mark of overtime Friday night as the second-ranked Badgers beat the fifth-ranked Minnesota Gophers 4-3 in a WCHA game at LaBahn Arena.
“Another classic Gopher-Badger game,” Gophers coach Brad Frost said. “Unfortunately we were on the wrong side of it. I’m really proud of our team and our fight. We gave ourselves a chance to win.”
Peyton Hemp scored first for Minnesota (24-6-1) in the opening period in what proved to be a see-saw battle all night. It was her 12th goal of the season.
Wisconsin (27-4) took the lead with second-period goals by Laney Potter and Marianne Picard.
Minnesota’s Josefin Bouveng tied the game early in the third period with her 12th goal of the season. But the Badgers pulled back ahead with a Britta Curl goal at 7:26.
Bouveng sent the game to overtime with a power-play goal with just 61 seconds left in regulation.
Skylar Vetter stopped 31 shots for the Gophers but suffered her fifth loss of the season. Wisconsin’s Jane Gervais made 26 saves to earn the victory.
The teams will wrap up this weekend’s series at 2 p.m. today at LaBahn Arena.
