John Schreiber traded from Red Sox to Royals for MiLB arm

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Red Sox and Royals agreed to a spring training trade on Saturday morning.

As first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, right-handed reliever John Schreiber will go to Kansas City, and minor-league righty David Sandlin is joining the Sox organization. The Red Sox confirmed the trade shortly thereafter.

Schreiber, 29, was originally drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 15th round in 2016. He debuted with them in 2019, and made 28 appearances at the big-league level over two seasons before arriving in Boston ahead of the ’21 season.

After only appearing in one game for the Sox that first season, Schreiber emerged as a dominant high-level arm in the ’22 bullpen, posting a 2.22 ERA across 64 outings, including 13 games finished and eight saves. Over 65 innings, he struck out 74 batters, issued 19 walks, and only allowed three home runs.

Though an injury limited him to 46 games last season and he wasn’t as effective as the year before, he pitched to a 3.86 ERA over 46 2/3 innings, including making his first two career starts.

In Schreiber, the Royals add a high-leverage arm to their bullpen, and he joins a team that’s beginning to emerge from a long rebuild.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, shave about a million dollars off the payroll in exchange for minor league depth who has starter potential.
