Division 1 girls state swimming

From start to finish, there was no question who would be taking home the girls Division 1 Swimming & Diving state championship

Concord-Carlisle dominated the meet with 381 points to capture their first ever swimming & diving state championship Saturday morning at MIT’s Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center. Defending state champs, Lincoln-Sudbury trailed with 212.5 points, followed by Newton South with 164.5.

“It’s super exciting,” said Concord-Carlisle coach Matt Goldberg. “We knew from the beginning of the season that this was a special group of girls and we had a shot at it.”

Concord-Carlisle jumped out to a lead in the first event, the 200-yard medley relay, narrowly defeating Lincoln-Sudbury 1:50.26 to 1:50.38. From there, Concord-Carlisle piled on the points, scoring in each event of the meet, and closing with an emphatic victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

“We had 20 girls here today and almost all of them scored points,” said Goldberg. “Our depth really allowed us to do what we’re doing.”

In the third event of the day, Concord-Carlisle’s Alana Leen won the 200-yard IM (2:06.52). Later in the meet, Leen added two wins as part of the 200-yard (1:40.60) and 400-yard freestyle relays (3:36.82) as well as a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.

“I was really nervous coming here but I’m feeling good about everyone’s results. Not just my own but the team as a whole,” said the senior Leen, who is committed to Villanova to swim next year. “It was so much fun. It’s bittersweet, I’m really sad to leave this team but really excited for the future.”

Not to be outdone by her senior teammate, freshman Elisabeth Reiling also played a starring role in the meet. Reiling won the 50-yard freestyle (24.48), placed third in the 100-yard freestyle and earned gold as part of the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.

“Being a freshman, no one really expects anything from you,” said Reiling. “When you do pull out good times and win meets, it just shows them that even though you’re young you can still pull out some decent times.”

Concord-Carlisle rounded out the meet with a victory from Maisey O’Donnell in the 1-meter diving with a score of 468.55.

Elsewhere in the meet, Zuri Ferguson of Attleboro tallied two impressive victories. First, in the 100-yard freestyle beating Reiling and Minnechaug’s Gabby Harding with a 51.31 final time. Then, Ferguson added a win in the 100-yard backstroke, defeating Leen with an automatic All-American final time of 54.23.

Sharon’s Feining Huang also tallied a pair of victories, winning in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.27) and 100-yard butterfly (57.79).
