Logan Drevlow lived up to the family name on Wednesday.

His sister, Sydney, won a Nordic state title two seasons ago as a freshman. She hasn’t since competed at the high school level, missing this season to instead participate in a national team camp.

But her brother carried on the legacy. Ranked third in the state coming into the meet, the Hopkins freshman was dominant Wednesday, winning the two-race pursuit with a time of 23 minutes, 36.2 seconds — 27 seconds clear of Wayzata senior Daniel Mccollor, who placed second.

Minnehaha Academy senior Finn Christiansen finished third, while Mounds Park Academy junior Eddie Snider — a cross country state champion in the fall — was fifth. Highland Park’s Tim Tzeutschler was 13th, Stillwater’s Carson Peterson was 14th and Central’s Henry Brandt finished 17th.

Hopkins coach Brett Schulze was standing next to Drevlow’s parents and asked, “What does it feel like to have two kids that were state champions?”

“I go, ‘You must be doing something right,’” she said by phone Wednesday.

Skiing excellence runs in the family.

“They got both those kids on the skis when they were really young. They’re not afraid of doing a lot of skiing. And they both can hurt. They both can hurt to push themselves,” Schulze said. “Some people shut down with that, but they can hurt, so they’ll do what it takes to try to do the best they can.”

That type of will shows up in the results. Drevlow finished 12th at state as an eighth grader. But he continues to ascend in the sport. Schulze estimated Drevlow grew roughly a foot over the last year.

“And he really works on his double poling and his upper-body strength. He does that throughout the year,” Schulze said. “Very dedicated, hard working, talented skier. He’s gotten better every year. I know his early-season goal was to be top five this year. He steadily improved with his efforts.”

Schulze noted Drevlow has gained invaluable experience racing on the senior national circuit. He continues to fine-tune his racing skills.

“He loves to compete. He loves to challenge himself, he loves to compete and he is a pretty smart racer. It’s all a learning thing for him. He’s a ninth grader, so I think everything he does, he learns from that and then tries to take it to the next level,” Schulze said. “We weren’t really sure how this would go today. But he was super excited, and it ended up a good result for him. It was really fun.”

Hopkins sits in second place in the team competition ahead of Thursday’s team sprint races. Wayzata is in first, while defending champion Duluth East is in third. Stillwater is fifth.
