
Kenley Jansen limited by muscle soreness as Red Sox spring training begins
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Kenley Jansen began his spring training workouts on Wednesday, but he’s not going to be throwing just yet.
Around midday, Craig Breslow announced that the veteran closer arrived at camp with “general lat soreness” in his throwing side. (Latissimus dorsi muscle.)
“It’s fine, just precaution,” Jansen said. “You want to make sure you’re 100-percent.”
“I’ve been feeling good this offseason, I’ve been throwing well, but the last week, I kind of slowed it down a little bit just to you know, make sure I loosen up the lat so I can be 100-percent,” he added.
The 36-year-old right-hander pitched to a 3.63 ERA over 51 appearances for Boston last season, including 42 games finished and 29 saves. He was the team’s lone All-Star, and the first reliable closer they’ve had in several years.
According to both Breslow and Jansen, it’s a mild ailment that should resolve itself before long.
“I don’t know, probably in like, a week I’ll be throwing again,” the closer surmised.
