Division 5 track: Littleton boys, North Reading girls race to titles

As Bona Bradshaw made the final turn in his opening race, he saw nothing but daylight in front of him. The Littleton track star was well on his way to a victory, a perfect start to his day.

While confident at that point, even he would have had a hard time envisioning just how his evening would pan out. The senior went on to place first in a pair of events, winning the boys mile (4:31.15) as well as the 1,000-meter run (2:34.33), pacing his group as Littleton captured its third consecutive MIAA Div. 5 boys indoor track and field title Wednesday night at the Reggie Lewis Center.

“It’s pretty amazing,” said Littleton boys Casey Kaldenberg. “This group of kids here, I’ve been with them for five years now as head coach. These are my kids, I didn’t inherit them. I brought them along with me, and they’re an amazing group of kids to coach.”

Bradshaw also finished third for the Tigers in the two mile (9:56.35), as they finished with 56 points. Tyler Castillo took first in the 55-meter dash (6.51 seconds). Timothy Rank also helped Littleton, finishing runner-up to Bradshaw in the mile (4:34.65).

Helmed by Giuliana Ligor, North Reading’s girls track and field team managed to keep its own dynasty rolling. The junior set the fastest time recorded in Massachusetts this season for the 600-meter run, blazing to a winning mark of 1:35.41. She also placed first in the long jump (17-04.25 feet), while finishing second in the 300 (40.11 seconds), as the Hornets won their third straight girls indoor track and field title, and first since moving to the Div. 5 level.

“The key is that these girls worked hard all season,” said North Reading coach Sotirios Pintzopoulos. “They came in confident. They came in knowing what they had to accomplish. Some things didn’t go our way, but we didn’t let that hold us back from the victory. It could have gone better, but we still won this meet, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Other stars included Carver’s Camren Allain, who dazzled the crowd at the boys high jump competition with a mark of 6-08 feet. It was the highest mark recorded in the Commonwealth this season, and 10th nationally.

Pentucket’s Kaylie Dalgar finished first during the girls mile (5:06.13) and also anchored her relay team to a win in the 4×800 (10:00.06).

During the most intense race of the day, Dennis-Yarmouth’s Breanna Braham edged Ligor for first place in the girls 300 by .03 seconds, a heartstopping finish to an incredible battle. The junior rallied to close the gap down the stretch, then lunged forward to complete the comeback at the finish line.

“Honestly, I was just trying to get out there,” Braham said. “Pace things off of (Ligor) as much as I can. Then, just give it my all at the end.”
