98.5 The Sports Hub’s VP was on JetBlue flight that struck another plane at Logan: ‘It was jolting’
Heading out to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl became a bit of an adventure for a 98.5 The Sports Hub exec when the plane she was on clipped another aircraft at Boston Logan International Airport.
Mary Menna, Beasley Media Group Boston VP and market manager, was on JetBlue Flight 777 early Thursday morning when out of nowhere, there was a commotion.
“The plane had been deicing for a while, and it’s 6 a.m., so people are dozing off. And all of a sudden, there was this boom,” Menna told the Herald several hours after the incident on Thursday.
“It was jolting,” she added. “Some people were like, ‘Ah!’ The woman next to me gasped.”
Shortly thereafter, the passengers on the jam-packed plane found out what had happened on the deicing pad on the tarmac.
JetBlue Flight 777’s left winglet had struck the right horizontal stabilizer on JetBlue Flight 551, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The plane’s wing was damaged.
“Nobody got hurt thankfully,” Menna said.
Jennifer Mehigan of Massport said in a statement that the planes “made contact while in the de-icing area” and called the collision “very minor.” The FAA is investigating the incident.
The passengers got off the aircrafts, and Menna’s flight to Las Vegas was delayed from 6 a.m. until about 11:30 a.m. She landed in Las Vegas at about 2 p.m. local time.
“The airline handled it really,” Menna said.
Brian O’Neil, who was also flying to the Super Bowl, said his plane was following a vehicle to the de-icing areas when he noticed it was “super close” to another plane parked in the area.
“After we passed, we felt a bump and the captain came over the loudspeaker to say we had just clipped the other plane,” said O’Neil, who later boarded a new flight to Las Vegas. “To me, it felt like we ran something over.”

JetBlue confirmed the incident and said the flights to Las Vegas and Orlando would operate on other aircraft, while both planes are out of service for repairs.
The airline said in a statement, “Safety is JetBlue’s priority, and we will work to determine how and why this incident occurred.”
