Marcus Foligno scores game-winner as Wild win first game back from break, 2-1
CHICAGO — Marcus and Nick Foligno have gone head-to-head 24 times in NHL regular season games, and between them had scored nine goals in those games. But never had they scored in the same game.
Until Wednesday.
Nick Foligno tied the score with 6:16 left in the second period, and Marcus Foligno scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third as the Wild beat the Chicago Blackhawks, 2-1, in a late start at United Center.
Jake Lucchini scored his second NHL goal in the first period, and Vinni Lettieri — playing for the first time since Dec. 30 — had two assists as the Wild won their first game back from their bye week/all-star break.
Lettieri also filled an open net late in the third period to block a shot by Chicago’s Colin Blackwell with 3:35 left. The Blackhawks pulled goaltender Petr Mrazek with 2:28 remaining, but Filip Gustavsson stopped a tap by Nick Foligno with 1:02 left and the Wild held on to stop a two-game skid and pull within five points of the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot.
Gustavsson finished with 21 saves. Mrazek stopped 23 shots for Chicago, which — playing its 12th straight game without injured rookie star Connor Bedard (jaw) — lost for the fifth straight time.
Lucchini scored on a slap shot from the blue line, a one-timer off a pass by Vinni Lettieri, who was playing in his first game since Dec. 30. Lucchini’s shot hit the left post and caromed into the net, but play didn’t stop.
After a video review, the horn sounded and play stopped, signaling Lucchini’s second career NHL goal, and first with the Wild since he signed a one-year, two-way deal on July 1.
The Wild led 1-0 after one period and were outshooting the Blackhawks 10-1, but Chicago skated hard in the second and tied the score when Nick Foligno one-timed a pass at the crease from Philipp Kurashev past Gustavsson at 13:44.
Each team had Grade A chances for the go-ahead goal early in the third period, first when Ryan Hartman got a bull’s eye pass from Mats Zuccarello in the left slot less than a minute into the period. Hartman skated right and tried to wrist the puck over a diving Mrazek but it sailed high at 48 seconds.
About 5 minutes later, Boris Katchouk raced ahead on a turnover and received a pass just past the red line and broke away for a free shot on Gustavsson. Katchouk faked left and pulled Gustavsson out, but the Wild goaltender got his left leg out just far enough to stop the puck with the blade of his skate to keep it tied 1-1 at 5:12.
Marcus Foligno finally broke the tie when he deflected a shot by Lettieri from the foot of the crease at 10:07. Hartman won a battle on the sideboards, and Brock Faber passed the puck back to the blue line, where Lettieri was entering the offensive zone.
