Joe Mazzulla ‘very comfortable’ with Celtics’ roster as NBA trade deadline approaches
Joe Mazzulla likes what he has.
As the NBA trade deadline quickly approaches on Thursday at 3 p.m., Mazzulla said he talks every day with president basketball of operations Brad Stevens, who is determining what moves the Celtics may make. But Mazzulla is taking more of a listening role. He seems content with his roster, which leads the NBA with a 38-12 record.
“The most important thing for me is never being a coach that always feels like we have to have something,” Mazzulla said. “Very comfortable with our roster, very confident with 1 through 17, and everybody on our roster has done something to impact winning, and that’s the most important thing. So that’s kind of my focus. …
“It’s (Stevens’) job to obviously make that decision. But I never want to be a coach that feels like you always have to have something else. More about just focusing on what we want to make better. That’s kind of where I’m at. He does what he does.”
The Celtics certainly don’t have any significant needs. Stevens said unprompted last month that they may target a “big wing” for depth, but that it could come internally. The C’s, who have an open roster spot, could add a backup big for some insurance if they’re not ready to convert Neemias Queta’s two-way contract into a standard one, and they have a traded player exception worth about $6.2 million for an addition.
Stevens acknowledged last month that any addition won’t be a game-changer and that the Celtics are limited financially by what they can do. And like last season, Stevens wants to be careful to not disrupt the strong chemistry they have. Inside the locker room, the entire roster has accepted and embraced their roles, which is something they don’t take for granted.
“There’s two ways when you add players to your team,” Stevens said in January. “They can add to your team and take away from your team. I think you just got to be careful. And so that’s something to think about when you have as many guys that are complementing each other as well as ours.”
Stevens wanted to see how their bench players would perform well in the month leading into the deadline. The likes of Queta, Luke Kornet and Oshae Brissett have responded with some strong efforts. But a move to fortify the roster in pursuit of a championship still can’t be ruled out, even if Mazzulla is content with staying put. He’s putting it in Stevens’ hands.
“At the end of the day, we have one of the best teams in the league and I think we have one of the best rosters, and so my focus is to try to just maximize that,” Mazzulla said. “That’s kind of the mindset you have to have. If you always sit there and say we need something else, you’re missing an opportunity to grow at something, so just try not to do that.”
White, Porzingis left out
With Joel Embiid and Julius Randle unable to participate in the All-Star Game due to injury, there was some hope that Derrick White and Kristaps Porzingis could still get an All-Star nod as injury replacements. But that dream died on Tuesday, as Atlanta’s Trae Young and Toronto’s Scottie Barnes were selected as the replacements for Embiid and Randle. The decision was made by NBA commissioner Adam Silver.
White was asked a few hours before the announcement about his hope to still make the All-Star team but wasn’t putting much thought into it.
“If it happens, that’d be awesome. But if not, I’ll just focus on these next few games and have a good All-Star break,” White said. “So either way, I’m just trying to focus on what’s going on right now.”
Tip-ins
The Celtics have five games remaining over the next week before the All-Star break, but Mazzulla isn’t looking forward to any time off. “I hate breaks,” Mazzulla said. “I wish there wasn’t even a halftime. Just keep playing.” …
Jaylen Brown is seriously considering participating in the dunk contest during All-Star weekend, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. He would be the first Celtics player since Gerald Green in 2007 and the first All-Star player since 2017 to participate in the dunk contest.
It’s unclear when an announcement would come, but Mazzulla supports him if he decides to do it and thinks he would be good at it.
“He’d be good at anything he tries,” Mazzulla said. …
Brown, who missed Sunday’s win over the Grizzlies with a lower back strain, practiced on Tuesday and was removed from the injury report. Jrue Holiday is questionable for Wednesday’s game against the Hawks due to a right elbow sprain.
