Chris Finch says Jaden McDaniels, Anthony Edwards can’t keep making late-game blunders

Anthony Edwards took an ill-advised technical foul in the fourth quarter of Minnesota’s eventual home loss to Orlando on Friday.

Jaden McDaniels committed a foul with nine seconds left to send the Magic to the line for the game-icing free throws, when the Timberwolves’ coaching staff had no intention of fouling.

Those are the types of mistakes that get teams beat in close games. And Minnesota’s young players like McDaniels and Edwards keep making them.

For McDaniels, it was the third time he’d committed a costly, senseless foul in the final 10 seconds of a game in a span of mere weeks.

Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said those crunch-time errors are “a major teaching point, for sure.”

“You can’t keep making these mistakes. Just can’t. These guys gotta rise to the occasion,” Finch said. “They got to put that stuff behind them. We’re gonna play a lot of high-intensity games and close games and they gotta keep their composure.”

More J-Mac?

Jordan McLaughlin tallied six points, two steals and an assist in just five minutes of action all while engineering some of Minnesota’s best basketball of the night in the first half of that 108-106 loss to Orlando.

Then he didn’t play over the final two quarters. Whoops, admitted Finch.

“Yeah, I thought we were doing a good job moving the ball, really kind of carving ’em up, making the extra pass. I should’ve played J-Mac in the second half, that’s on me,” Finch said. “He’s always a catalyst for ball movement. But we just stopped (moving it) completely.”

2-minute error

Mike Conley missed three shots in the final two minutes of that loss to Orlando. On one of those occasions, Conley should’ve been heading to the free-throw line.

In its Last Two Minute Report, the NBA said Conley was fouled by Jalen Suggs on a floater attempt with 1 minute, 50 seconds to play in the game.

“Suggs initiates contact with Conley’s right forearm and affects his floater attempt,” the report read.
