Jeff Hafley leaving Boston College to become the DC in Green Bay
Boston College head football coach Jeff Hafley is returning to the National Football League.
Hafley will leave BC after four seasons and three athletic directors to become the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers.
Green Bay will be Hafley’s fourth NFL stop. He served as defensive backs coach with Tampa Bay (2012-13), Cleveland (2014-15) and San Francisco (2016-18).
Hafley was Ryan Day’s secondary coach and co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State before coming to BC in 2020. Hafley began his tenure at the start of the COVID-19 outbreak and had to conduct team meetings, player interviews and recruitment visits on Zoom. The entire season was conducted under a strict quarantine and only one player caught COVID.
Hafley replaced Steve Addazio and BC went 6-5 in his first season that included 10 ACC opponents. BC voted as a team not to compete in a postseason bowl after 11 straight games that began with a road win at Duke. BC went 6-6 the following season but their match against East Carolina in the Military Bowl in Annapolis, Md., was cancelled by a coronavirus outbreak on the squad.
BC had it only one losing season on Hafley’s watch, going 3-9 in 2022. He went 6-6 in the 2023 regular season and, in his first bowl appearance, the Eagles upset No. 22 SMU, 23-14, in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl on Dec. 28 at Fenway Park. It was his final game at BC.
Hafley departs the Heights with an overall record of 22-26 overall and 12-22 in the ACC.
BC athletic director Blake James will be accepting applications to make the most significant hire of his tenure. BC opens the 2024 season on Labor Day at Florida State.
