4 men indicted for J’Ouvert parade shooting last summer

Four men have been indicted on charges related to shootings during last year’s J’Ouvert parade through Dorchester that left eight people injured.

Two of the four men are scheduled to appear in Suffolk Superior Court tomorrow.

Shots rang out a little before 7:45 a.m. on Aug. 26, 2023, in the area of 10 Talbot Ave., where the J’Ouvert parade was passing by as a kick-off to the larger annual Caribbean Carnival, according to Boston Police that day. In all, six men and two women were shot. Six of the victims were transported to area hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries while the remaining two victims suffered graze wounds and declined treatment.

Authorities said the suspected shooters were part of two rival groups present in the area and antagonizing each other across the street near the Boys and Girls and that they started shooting just as officers stationed on the route started approaching them. Police would arrest two of the suspects that day.

Hubman Hunter, 31, of Lynn, was the last of the four suspected shooters to be found and arrested two months after the incident. His arrest followed arrests of Gerald Vick, 30, of Dorchester; Dwayne Francis, 30, of Dorchester; John Davis, 32, of Boston; Sebastian Fernandez, 21; Limondji Simon, 26, of Medford; Nakhi Cox-Obryant, 18, of Dorchester; and Maceo Withers-Brewer, 21, of Boston.

On Friday, a Suffolk grand jury indicted four of those men on various charges.

Hunter was charged with eight counts of assault and battery with a firearm, a third offense of illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm and possession of a firearm in commission of a felony. He is scheduled to plead on those charges tomorrow.

Vick is charged with eight counts of assault and battery with a firearm, a second offense of illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm, possession of a machine gun, possession of a large capacity magazine, and possession of a firearm in commission of a felony. Vick pleaded not guilty on the charges Monday and is scheduled for a bail hearing tomorrow.

Monteiro, 21, is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a firearm in commission of a felony. He is held without bail and is scheduled for arraignment on Monday.

Francis is charged with illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a large capacity feeding device. He is scheduled for arraignment on Feb. 27.

This is a developing story.
